Our Exhibitions.
- The Art and History of Early California. Exhibition of the museum's collection explores the story of California from the First Peoples through the Gold Rush. Through a display of art and artifacts, experience the rich history, diverse beginnings, and artistic and cultural heritage of early California.
- Told from a Totem. Sixty students (grades 9-12) from Oakland High School’s Visual Arts Academy created contemporary totem poles, using recycled materials, during sessions led by Oakland High teachers and Oakland Museum of California staff. The students personalized their work with symbols, plaster, paint, and ornaments. The totems differ wildly one from another.
- Art. Visitors to the Gallery of California Art will experience the story of art in the Golden State from the mid-1800s to today. The earliest watercolors, prints and drawings are by artists employed to document early explorations to the West. The excitement of the Gold Rush and the opening of the West attracted large numbers of artists. Photographers using daguerreotypes recorded the people and the environment.
- History. What makes California California? Explore that question in the Cowell Hall of California History in the permanent exhibition California: A Place, A People, A Dream. Meet the people who have shaped California – natives, adventurers, wealth-seekers, health-seekers, colonists, settlers, newcomers, old-times, sun-worshippers, reformers, upper class to underclass – people of all colors – and the dreams they have pursued. Explore the forces that have shaped California – the environment, the Gold Rush, earthquakes, wartime, the computer chip, Hollywood, the automobile, social and political protest, countercultures, discrimination, leisure and benevolent climate, freedom and opportunity. Encounter the objects that tell this history.
- Natural Sciences. Explore scenes of California's many natural areas in the Natural Sciences Gallery. Young people enjoy searching the exhibits carefully for hidden wildlife and observing the larger dioramas illustrating dramatic wildlife scenes. Natural history students and amateur naturalists find this an excellent site for studying the flora and fauna of the state. Docent-led school tours of the gallery are available to assist classes in exploring ecological concepts in greater detail. At the gallery entrance, the film Fast Flight offers a quick journey over California, and the large relief map illustrates the state's dramatic topography.
School tours and programs are offered in California art, history, and natural sciences. A variety of educational opportunities are available both at the museum and in the classroom.
For families and adults, the museum presents festivals and celebrations, along with special events relating to changing exhibitions. Monthly Family Explorations programs provide children and their adult companions an opportunity to creatively learn and explore topics related to the art, history, and natural sciences of California.
